Itty Bitty Week

Thank you for all your interesting comments on my previous post.  I am so pleased it inspired some of you to have a go at Dorset Buttons they can have many ingenious uses. The ladies on the workshop I did last week were also very taken with the idea.  It was only a short workshop at Spin A Yarn my wonderful local woolshop but was such a success that we have decided to make the next one in the Spring Term a whole day!

I had a lovely time at my daughter's last week and thoroughly enjoyed spending my prize money.  I now have a few outfits to wear and we also managed to squeeze in a couple of bits for her too.

On the craft front, it has been a rather itty bitty week.  I am still working on my mandala which although complete, needs attaching to a hoop - very kindly cut out by my OH I may add.  So another 2 or 3 rounds needed to attach this to the hoop.

I have also started another crochet project called Sophie's Garden which I found on a wonderful site called Look At What I Made.  It's packed full of wonderful crochet patterns to fuel the imagination.
You can see what I've achieved so far, but the picture is a little odd as I was crocheting in the car on our way to stay with friends!

I am using Axminster carpet yarn which is at least 80% wool and intend to make a loose cover for a foot stool.  I want to be able to wash it and expect it will felt slightly which will be interesting.  I'll let you know how it goes.

My OH is on an acrylic painting course this weekend, so I thought I would share his creation with you.  It's a little different for him as he often works in water colour but I rather like the effect he has created. They were painting in some woods nearby and he was trying to capture the light shining through the trees.  See what you think.

Today he is painting 'water' so I am looking forward to seeing what he arrives home with later. Watch this space!

Chester's Choice!

Another enjoyable day at Hobbycraft demonstrating Jumbo Crochet.  Once again I met a lot of lovely people and thought I would just share this one photo with you all!

Polymer Clay Buttons

Hello

A very busy week this week so only a very short post today.  We went for a wonderful walk along the Devon coast around Salcombe yesterday.  There are far too many photos to add to this post so if you would like to see how beautiful this area is please click on the link.

First I would like to say thank you for all your comments last week and the help in naming Maisy's little tiny friend.  I finally decided to go with the name Minnie as suggested by Catkin Jane.  She really is very minnie and I love the idea of 'wearing purple' when I'm a grandma.  Thank you all for your help, it makes it far more fun than thinking up a name on my own!

You may have noticed for the past few weeks I have been answering each comment.  I hope you like this idea, I know it's not necessary but it feels a little more personal.

This week I have been having a fiddle with polymer clay buttons.  I hopefully will be running a short workshop on how to make a very simple crochet flower and turn it into a brooch or hair tie.  As there will be no crochet knowledge necessary for this workshop I need to make these as simple as possible.  Therefore I thought a button centre would be perfect.  As you can see from the picture below  I haven't got around to adding the holes yet and I will still be experimenting with other colours.

A Kidsilk Haze Fix!

Hi Everyone

Hope you have all had a good week, our weather has been a bit disappointing again lately rather a shame after that spell of sunshine we were all beginning to enjoy.  What about the Olympics?  Haven't we had some fantastic results?

I've had a very bitty week really, not getting much done at all.  I did manage to put out a few posters to advertise my workshops and I have just been preparing one for the Hobbycraft Store as I am doing a Crochet Flower Workshop in their Kingsteignton store on 14th September and I have agreed to do another workshop for Social Fabric over in Totnes, a new venture for a lady called Caroline so I hope it goes well for her.  When you look back at it, maybe I have achieved a something.

I wanted to share a couple of things with you.  I had a 25% off voucher to use in Hobbycraft which had to be used by today - so as it was raining extremely hard all day it was an ideal opportunity to pop down for a bit of retail therapy.  Look what I bought!!  It is so scrummy!

Three balls of Kidsilk Haze Stripe!!!!  I have no idea what I shall do with it but using it recently to make those fingerless gloves I absolutely love it.  I had to buy 3 balls just in case I found a lacey cardigan or jumper pattern, but a pretty drapey scarf would also be wonderful.  I wondered whether I should design my own jumper, although Kidsilk Haze may not be a particularly suitable yarn for a beginner designer to start on!!!  I'll let you know.

You may remember a short while ago I made 'Maisy' a little elephant.  Well I promised a dear lady I would make one for her to keep for when her great-grandaughter came over.  Unfortunately I didn't have enough of the cotton thread I used for Maisy so had to use something a little thinner.  As you can imagine she came out just a little smaller!

I crocheted her dress in Kidsilk Haze that I had left over from the gloves.  I think she needs a bow or flower in her 'hair'.  What do you think?

Here she is next to Maisy.  Maisy is about 3" tall and she is about 2" tall.  Both created from the same pattern written by Sharon Ojala.  If you click on her name it will take you to her blog where you will find the pattern.  Talking about names, any preferences for this little cutie?

Hobbycraft Update and A Graduation or Two!

Phew! I don't seem to have had any time to think just lately and when I have had time I'm just too shattered to do anything!  Sound familiar?  Thought it might!

This post is going to be a bit early for Handmade Monday so I will link up to you guys in a few days time  (I've done it now so why not pop over to see what all the other lovely crafters have been up to) but if I don't get it done now I shall miss yet another week.  So much to say, but so little time to write it down!

This weekend we have our younger daughter and boyfriend coming to stay and we have friends coming for a meal this evening so I have been running around making everything just so!!! (As we do!)  I actually made meringue for a pavlova this morning, they were cooking by 8.30am!! I was very impressed with myself. Not sure how they will turn out though, they look ok but the taste test will determine it!  I'll let you know :)

Anyway, thank you all again for your comments on my last post I shall try and answer each comment individually this time as I think I have been neglecting you all.

Hobbycraft

Ok now to Hobbycraft!  It was last sunday when I went in, you may remember that was one of our first real days of sunshine!  Chester really did arrive in style.

Here he is about to leave, he has his safety belt on but I think he looks a little uncertain!

Chester arrives safely!

He needn't have worried, he arrived in plenty of time!  I followed him down (I couldn't fit him in my car with all the other bits and pieces!) which was great as I was able to see the looks on people's faces when he drove by.  I heard one little boy say to his dad "Look at that huge ..." he wasn't quite sure what to call it and I'm not sure his dad would have believed him anyway unless he saw it for himself!  I could see a lot of pointing and gesticulating from people and Chester certainly turned many heads!

Chester had a great view across the store, watching everyone coming and going.  He was sitting on a perfect chair, one of those tall bar stools.  I was very cheeky and borrowed it from some great guys at Willow Kitchens, Bathrooms and Bedrooms who have a store just around the corner.  They thought it was fantastic when I explained how I had made him and the size of the hooks I was selling!!!!!! Innuendoes came spilling out!!!!!!  A big thank you to these guys, they made Chester very comfy!

Here is Tina, the lovely lady, who made all this possible.  I think she was explaining about the store to Chester?!!

I had two tables this size, one I used to display the yarn, the hooks and the items you could make and the other (which unfortunately I don't seem to have a picture of) for demonstrating where people could sit and have a go with the Jumbo hooks and yarn.

Did you spot Taffy perched on top of the yarn?  I couldn't leave him behind, he would have felt so left out!

As you can see it's a fantastic store!  You can just pick out Tina and me having a chat with Chester in pride of place.  I met some really lovely people, the staff were all so helpful and eager to learn about what I was demonstrating and they all fell in love with Chester.  I sold some yarn and hooks and also received bookings for my workshops (Introduction to Crochet is proving very popular, only a couple of spaces left on this one!).  A brilliant day and a BIG thank you to everyone who made it happen :)

Hobbycraft

Hello everyone

Time for another Handmade Monday!  I think each week that I have plenty of time to get prepared for the next one, only to find they come tapping you on the back far quicker than you imagine!

Thank you for to those of you who commented last week on A Kidsilk Haze Experience.  The shopping trip was not very successful although I did find a decent bra! (whispers quietly so only ladies hear!) I think you'll know what I mean, finding one that fits is like looking for a needle in a haystack!  We found that within the first half hour but unfortunately it went down hill from there. Although, it was lovely to spend a complete day with the youngest of my lovely daughters :)

Hobbycraft

Well, I may have mentioned this before but it is getting closer now so thought I'd do a quick post about it.

We have a new Hobbycraft Store opening very near to us, so in this neck of the woods it is quite exciting as our nearest store would be Bristol, about an hour and a half away.

It is due to open on Thursday 19th July and over the weekend various activities will be taking place in store.

Where does Fiddly Fingers come in?  On the Sunday I will have my own bit of space in the store from which to promote my workshops and sell my huge balls of yarn and huge hooks.  I'm rather excited as it will mean a ready made audience of like minded crafters.

I am busy getting ready at the moment. Made the gloves that you saw last week for the display and am just starting a slouchy hat from the same book in Rowan Cocoon an 80% merino wool and 20% kid mohair blend.  It's wonderfully soft.  I'm making signs for Fiddly Fingers so people know who I am and signs to let everyone know what workshops I'm doing. If anyone here is interested you can find them all on the Workshops page.  I need to wind some more balls of wool as well, it's so difficult to know how many to take with me.  All this and I'm still not sure what size space I will have which makes it all the more difficult to plan.  Oooh and of course Chester will be coming with me!  He will be the star of the show, I'm sure!

I'm also going to run some workshops in store over the coming months.  Not sure what they will be yet, but what a great opportunity!  Probably will run them for about 2 hours at a time.  Any suggestions on what we could make? Can be crochet or crafts of any kind really but I would like people to be able to achieve something to take home with them within that 2 hours.

I'll update you next week with a few pictures and let you know how I get on.  I may be a bit late posting on Handmade Monday next week but I'll do my best, so don't forget to wait for me!!!

Off to my eldest daughter's graduation tomorrow so may have a picture or two for you.

Koala

Hi there

I'm running very late this week, as you have probably noticed.  Just turned my computer on to find that lots of you have already posted on Handmade Monday, I will sit down this evening and have a catch up.

I was cooking a roast for a pre football dinner last night and of course then there was the football.  Not that I am a fan but when food, drink (just a little of course, it would be rude not to!!) and a get together with friends are involved, it just has to be done!  We had a good evening though, despite England losing (although with my very limited knowledge of football I personally didn't think we deserved to win!)

I'm sat outside waiting for the sunshine to come out, probably my fault it's not though, as I put a skirt on today, first time for weeks, in the hope of catching a few rays on my lily white legs!!  But it does mean I can actually see the computer screen, I suppose!!

Maisy


I must thank you all for your comments on last week's post!  I'm really pleased you all liked Maisy and I have to admit I had wondered about a Jumbo version just like some of you did!  But it was only a passing thought for now!!!!  It seems as though everyone likes the sound of Jumbo crochet and I agree with you it does sound a lot more friendly and like you said "It does what it says on the tin" :)  I had a good few laughs reading your comments, thank you so much!! Keep 'em comin'! :)

Koala

I have been messing about again this week and found a rather cute pattern for a little koala so thought I'd have a go.

I crocheted him in Sirdar Blur as I thought he would look nice slightly fluffy.

Here he is next to my mug of tea so you can get a sense of scale, looks like he's giving you a little wave in this photo!!  He doesn't have a name yet!  Anyone got any suggestions?  I'll let you know what I've decided next week.

I've also been trying to come up with ideas for the Textured Crochet Workshop I have coming up in the Autumn.  I'm intending us to have a go at as many heavily textured stitches as we can find.  If anyone has any favourites please pass them on to me.

Here is the beginning of a popcorn square and I'm afraid that's as far as I got yesterday.  So when I have finished writing this blog, I shall carry on.

Rather than just churn out samples my idea was to make these samples into a bag or a basket come the end.  Perhaps a bag with 4 different stitch squares on each side, at least then you have something useful after all your efforts.  Or maybe a basket with 6 squares sewn together to make the edge and a spiral base.  A bit like the granny square bowl I made a while ago.

Ok, that's it for this week, I'm going to carry on with my squares now and I shall sit down this evening and have a relaxing browse through all your lovely blogs over on Handmade Monday.  Can't wait to see what names you come up with for 'Koala'!

Dartington Food (and Craft) Fair

Hello everyone

I'm shattered!  But was determined to link up with Handmade Monday today.

Liz and I have been to the Dartington Food Fair today and will be there tomorrow and Tuesday as well.  Hence why I am shattered!

This is my first outing with my extreme crochet hooks and huge balls of yarn!  My main purpose for this fair is to promote the workshops I'm hoping to run.  As you can see Chester has pride of place and was a BIG hit all day long.  Why has he got his feet in a bag? I hear you say!  Well it was only raining slightly but we found the water ran under the marquee wall and collected in small puddles.  So the reason for this bag is to keep poor Chester's feet dry.  Perhaps tomorrow I should take some wellies for him :)

I was very pleased with the interest people showed in the huge hooks and the balls of yarn.  The basket which can be made from one of the huge balls is visible in front of the crochet hooks.  The bags I made, quite a while ago now, are hung on the front of my table as I had very little room.  The one on the left is in Astrakhan stitch, the grey one in the centre is Crocodile stitch and the duffle bag on this end is in spike stitch.

Here is Chester sporting his Jubilee bow tie.  You can just spot a 'normal' amineko and Taffy in the picture too!  Luckily Taffy had his boots on!

Here is Liz's stall, with all the lovely things she makes.  Her Jubilee bags (on the top shelf) are wonderful and you can just pick out a couple of Jubilee cushions on the table in the front l/h corner.

As you can see from the above picture, I laid out chairs so anyone could have a go at the extreme crochet.  It was very popular, even for people who hadn't crocheted before.

We had an enjoyable day although it was pretty quiet really.  Apparently there will be more signs up for tomorrow and something going on immediately outside the marquee to encourage people up our way as I think the problem was there was a large demonstration tent just down below us.  People saw that and didn't realise the craft tent was behind it.  Hopefully tomorrow will be better, although I met some lovely people today and made some interesting contacts.

For anyone who saw Fiddly Fingers at the fair today, I would value any comment as it was wonderful to meet you all.  Thank you for dropping by :)

Craft Fair, Abbotskerswell, Devon

Hello Everyone

I'm supposed to be cleaning out the inside of the car but it's raining!  So, thought I would use my time productively and talk to you guys instead!  Far more enjoyable!

As will be the norm from now on, I will start first by thanking you all for your comments on my previous post, Cirlcle of Love Handcrafted Giveaway.  I will enter those of you who have 'liked' and 'tweeted' and left a message on my blog- you have remembered to leave a message telling me what you've done haven't you?  You need to do that in order for me to enter you into the competition.   Don't fret! If this is the first time you have heard of it and haven't done it yet there's still time, just click on the link and you will be able to find out what it is all about.  Now, not 4 but 5 lovely prizes to win!

As I expect  many of us are this week, I am doing a small craft fair on Bank Holiday Monday, so I thought I would show you a few of the items I have recently made to sell.

Here is a pretty Tea Light holder I made.  I think I have made about 8 or 10 of these!

This is something a little different.  Wooden bunting with pegs on the reverse to hang notes/pictures/cards etc.  My husband cuts out the wooden shape for me and makes a simple peg to glue on the back, I paint them in whatever way I fancy and string them together using cord I have twisted to get matching colours.  I have sold a few of these now and they get lots of lovely comments but this is the first time I have packaged them up as I found they were so time consuming to display hung up and kept getting tangled etc.

Here is yet some more bunting, this time it's mini fabric bunting.  Each flag is only about 2.5cm.

I have a few more bits and pieces stashed away and am having a table next to my SIL Lime Green Lizzie and she has loads and loads of things!!!  Our main aim this time is to gather names of people who may be interested in doing workshops with us.  We have now found a venue and are just

deciding what workshops we should offer!  It's exciting times, so watch this space! Liz is into textiles and me the crochet.  Got any ideas on what workshops should be! Should materials be included or should you bring your own according to a materials list?  What do you like about a workshop, what do you dislike?  Do you prefer all day workshops or half day?  Any thoughts would be most appreciated.

I was very lucky this week and received my prize from Butterfly Blossom.  She created a very pretty string of bunting for me to use above my stall.  I shall take a photo on Monday so you can all see how lovely it was.

Oh and of course Chester will be coming with me too!!  And I may even take Taffy!

Chester Goes Topless!

Hello Everybody!

I expect you have all had a wonderful weekend with wall to wall sunshine?  I know I have!  A wonderful walk around Salcome on the Kingsbridge Estuary, with 270 degree views from Snapes Head up, down and along the river.  Absolutely stunning!  And a day in the garden today topped off with a few G &T's in the late afternoon sunshine (wine ran out!!).  Ignore any typing errors please!

Well Chester was enjoying the sunny weather too!  He fancied a drive out in Rob's Mazda with the top down.

Come on then Chester, start her up!

Oh dear Chester!  Don't like the look of all that smoke!  Better make sure there is nothing wrong before you drive off!

Experimenting with Extreme Crochet

Hello everyone

Hope you've all had a relaxing weekend.  We have had a lovely time, family 80th birthday celebration yesterday, short walk and a look round the 'Blue' exhibition at The Devon Guild of Craftsmen this morning  http://www.crafts.org.uk/ and a bit of extreme crochet this afternoon (the real reason for this blog!). Perfect!

I thought it would be great to link this post with Handmade Monday over at 1st Unique gifts http://www.1stuniquegifts.co.uk/blog/about-handmade-monday/ as I know you all enjoyed the blog post about Chester.   This project, whilst smaller, is created on an even bigger hook than Chester!  Think what size Chester could turn out if I used the hook and yarn I used for these projects!  Wowee!  I'd have a job to get him in the house, let alone the car!  Anyway, I'll stop waffling.  I know you want to find out about these projects!

Well as I have already said, the projects are quite small but the hook and yarn is not!  You may or may not know that I run workshops from time to time and I have an Extreme Crochet one coming up soon at the end of April and hopefully another one coming up in June, so I am starting to think of projects which can be achieved in one day.  Remembering of course it also takes a while to sort out all the yarn!  Anyway have a look at the first one and see what you think.

It is difficult to tell the scale in this photograph but the next one may be more helpful.  I used a 25mm hook and 20 strands of dk yarn at a time.  I thought this would look rather nice on the wall of a conservatory maybe.  I did think it would look even better if I edged it in the same yellow as the centre but I haven't got enough!

Does this show the scale a little better?  I hung it on the wall in place of one of the pictures and held up a bottle of wine next to it so you could see how big it actually is.

A close-up of the flower shows the stitches in this photo.  Counting sewing in the ends it took about 1.5 - 2 hrs to complete.  So, may be possible to make a couple in a one day workshop depending how much chat and eating cake is going on!

This next project, a Granny Square seat pad cushion for a garden chair (or a kitchen chair for that matter) or a kneeling pad for gardening, was suggested by In the Sky http://inthesky1.blogspot.co.uk/ so I thought I'd give it a go.

You would not believe it, but this is only 2 rounds of a granny square!  It probably took a similar amount of time to work up as the flower - perhaps nearer the 1 - 1.5 hours.  It's the sewing in of the ends that take the time.

Here it is on a chair!  Unfortunately we have no square chairs in the house, this was the nearest I could find, but at least it gives it some perspective.  No stuffing needed for this cushion!

If you would like a few statistics, the flower took 28m of 20 strand yarn and the seat pad took about 32m.  The flower is actually the same distance across as the seat pad.  Accidental not planned!

A Fantastic Workshop

Hi there!

I have had a fantastic day today and thought I would share it with you all!

I ran the Knitted Wire Brooch workshop at Countess Wear Village Hall, Exeter, Devon today http://www.countesswearvillagehall.co.uk  and I am very pleased to say a brilliant day was had by everyone.   A lovely group of ladies, 8 in total, with lots of chat and laughter and some wonderful brooches made by the end of the day.

I took Chester with me today, to promote the two crochet workshops in April.  He managed to squeeze into the front seat on this journey!  He didn't look too comfy but didn't complain!

I arrived early to set up well in advance.  

Here is the hall, set up ready for use.

Chester 'supervised' the table with the beads and wire and the ever important tea and coffee!

He seems to have a certain 'air of importance' about him, don't you think?

Wire and bead colours chosen, we finally got down to business!

Here are a couple of brooches with the outside edge completed
and before the centre was added.  Looking good so far!

At this point we stopped for lunch and how lucky we were!  The sun was shining and there was a little sheltered spot just outside the hall door, perfect for a picnic!  Not the most scenic position (hence no photos) but good to feel the sun on your face.

After lunch, fat, full and drowsy after our session in the sun, we pressed on with the centre part of the brooch and finally got around to sewing all the components together.

Here are all the finished brooches.  Don't they look fantastic?

You may notice there are only 7 brooches but there were 8 people on the workshop!  One lady had been ill previously and this was her first day out.  Unfortunately during the afternoon she was feeling unwell again and decided to go home.  She just needed to sew everything together so took it with her to complete when she felt better.  We all wish her well and hope she starts feeling well again soon.

From the above photos I think you will all agree everyone produced a very unique brooch, some of which were being given as presents.

I'm about to blow my own trumpet now as I had wonderful comments from all the ladies, with requests for some more workshops (which I shall work on as soon as I can).  I hope you don't mind but I feel so proud and would love to share them with you.  I've listed them below!
